How Do Hearing Aids Work?

In the early days when a person was hard of hearing they would use a simple amplification cone and by holding this cone up to their ear people would talk into the cone, effectively channelling their voices into the ear. This was the simplest type of hearing aid.
It was not long until small amplifiers with a miniature speaker attached were developed so as to enable hearing-impaired people to hear through analogue amplification. The main problem with these early aids was the weight and inconvenience of the bulky earpiece and separate battery pack. Further this early hearing aid did not provide true hearing quality. Another early development was the tabletop hearing aid to which earphones and a microphone were connected. While this design eliminated a lot of external noise, such as the noise from brushing against their clothing, they too were not ideal as they were not portable.
An additional innovation allowed for microphones to be fixed to clothing, but unless they were at mouth level of the person talking it often just resulted in unintelligible sounds. If the wearer of these devices turned up the volume this effectively increased the volume of background noise.
Digital Processing Enables Noise Filtering
As digital sound processing technology matured it changed how hearing aids work. Digital sound processing allows certain sound frequencies to be amplified while blocking out other non-relevant noises like background noises from vehicles and the like. This evolving digital technology enables hearing aid manufacturers to offer filters for background noises while allowing normal conversation to pass through to the wearer.
Today’s range of hearing aids are also much smaller and designed to fit in the ear (In-The-Channel) or behind the ear without the need for an external microphone that could pick up unwanted sounds.
So if you currently wear an old style hearing aid it is in your very best interest to undertake some research into how the modern type of hearing aid works and to determine whether this advanced technology can improve the level of your hearing. Be assured there are many organizations that are able to provide you with high quality digital hearing aids and you are encouraged to check out what they have to offer.
Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by 50%, and that’s important because a home fire starts every 83 seconds! The faster you know about a fire, the faster you can start moving your family outside. The SA100B alarm with strobe light for hearing impaired uses a super-bright xenon strobe light and flashes about 60 times per minute, which has been proven effective in waking people with hearing impairments. It meets UL standards and requirements of the American with Disabilities Act.
