DIY Hearing Aid Cleaning & Repair Tips
Tuesday, December 11th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedAs you know hearing aids are these days very small but expensive to buy and need to be constantly kept in top working condition. Here are a few DIY hearing aid cleaning and repair tips so the owner can maintain the device in excellent condition. As these hearing aid units are so small and contain complicated electronic circuitry, owners should never attempt to take them apart and attempt their own repairs. The owner can, however, perform some DIY hearing aid cleaning and repair jobs that would normally be passed over to qualified professionals to undertake. The three main threats to hearing aids, regardless of the type or the number of features they contain, are children, pets and earwax.
Children, particularly young children, may not understand the sensitivity of this type of equipment and can very easily damage the equipment through rough handling. Also young children could be hurt by accidentally swallowing the battery or, if the unit is small enough, the entire piece. When performing DIY hearing aid cleaning and repair jobs it is recommended that this is done well out of the reach of children.
Pets, particularly dogs and cats can render your hearing aid useless by chewing the whole unit or components. Again do not leave your hearing aid in places that you pets can access.
The third threat is that the hearing aid device is affected by excessive amounts of ear wax and this build-up of wax can prevent the hearing aid from functioning properly. By doing DIY hearing aid cleaning and repairs you will be able to protect your valuable device and help prolong its life.
No Owner Serviceable Part Inside
Hearing Aids do not contain electronics that can be maintained or repaired by anyone but a professional and qualified technician so owners please do not even attempt to open your device. Instead your equipment will benefit from thorough cleaning and this will help prevent breakdowns and problems and will allow the sounds though the microphone to be clear.
If you own a Behind-The-Ear style of hearing aid, the only part you need to clean and maintain is the ear mold. As this is removable from the unit, and has no parts inside, it can be cleaned by placing it in a cup of warm water containing washing detergent for a few minutes and then rinsed. After allowing it to air dry, if any water remains inside the tube, it can be removed by blowing through the pipe.
For DIY hearing aid cleaning and repair for other device types use a soft brush to remove any wax build-up that may appear on the unit. If your hearing aid equipment is not functioning fully it is recommended you take it to an authorized and qualified hearing aid technician for testing and repair. Please do not try to undertake repairs by yourself as this could inflict further damage to your device.
